development practitioner with more than 22 years experience of leading and managing people, programs and projects. There is no dichotomy or difference between who I am (personally) and my life’s work. ‘Uwamito’ is an Amerindian verb with Carib origins which means ‘to make oneself resilient’. Wesley Coombs, one of our team members, suggested the name after doing his research based on a brainstorming conversation he and I had. The photograph for our cover page (The water lily) was taken by well-known photographer Salim October from Foto Melange. (I am grateful for my circle) I originate from a small rural village in Trinidad (Rio Claro) and in our culture everyone has two names, the registered name and the name everyone calls you by, mine is Lily. The Lily is a resilient flower that will bloom in dire, muddy and murky environments. In many cultures, lilies associate with ‘rebirth and optimism’ as they return to waterways after the rains, even if they dried up the previous season.
